Premiere: Jupiter Jax – C.Y.F.I

Following on from two excellent album-length releases last year, Jupiter Jax steps away from his usual home on 100% Silk to provide the second release for Leeuwarden-based record shop-turned-label, Deeptrax.

Since his first cassette release, City Life ’88, the Maltese producer has forged a place for himself creating intricately percussive house and techno, washed with lo-fi ambience, with previous highlight tracks including the aptly titled ‘Breakbeat Authority and Visions, a collaboration with Xosar on his LP of the same name. The Urban Legends EP for Deeptrax tones down the soundscapes we find on the previous releases, favouring bassline driven four-to-the-floor tracks with Detroit-styled pads. B-side cut, ‘C.Y.F.I’ chugs along at a slow tempo, accompanied by hazy tape vibrato laden chords, reminiscent of Patricia’s ‘Josephine’, and arpeggiated bleeps, swelling towards a syncopated bassline and funky low-end crunch. A deep and stripped-back, but impressively emotive track for the warm-ups and the afters.

Jupiter Jax’s Urban Legends EP is out 11th July – pre-order from Juno.
