A window into another side of a producer’s musical personality is ardently welcomed; the kind of musings that treat us to their diverse tastes and influences. Better known under his hip-hop moniker HulkHodn – but also under aliases Des Griffin and Testiculo – German producer Hodini has brandished his multi-genre brush and painted us a picture that’s all shuffling house, gritty samples and analog drum machines.

You may be familiar with his far-reaching hip-hop exploits which see him working closely with pal Retrogott – as Huss und Hodn – as well as Twit One, Lazy Jones and Hubert Daviz. But his house-leaning productions have seen partnerships with usual suspects, Glenn Astro and Max Graef on Money $ex, and now, fellow Cologne native Damiano von Erckert, who welcomes him to the ava. family for his forthcoming EP PUF!.

It’s a shuffling sample-laden collection, the production preserving that lo-fi jazzy feel that has become inherent in ava. and Money $ex’s releases. The sweet and soulful sounds of ‘nTRO’ give us an organic taste of Hodini’s musical vocabulary, before ‘Shamading’ takes us on a journey through twinkling free jazz keys, vocal samples and a meek bassline, all atop a foundation of beaming notes. Astro’s remix dips into the hip-hop stratosphere with a deep bump, before treading back into familiar terrain by way of jingling, distorted drums and oscillating notes whirling overhead.

Bringing ava. boss Damiano in for the collaboration, ‘Puf Zue Lampe’ has a wonderful groove, navigating through layers of playful keys and deftly sourced samples. ‘Gritty’ upholds the same sentiment with a funky bounce that drives the track and a healthy addition of overlaid vocal snippets and wavering notes.

Providing a short but sweet interlude, ‘Niteloop Pt. 2’ takes a modest bassline and adds crescendos of flute and distant chatter, before the muffled horns and down beat keys of ‘Sheeshkabop’ wrap up proceedings. PUF! illustrates that Hodini – be it house, hip-hop or jazz – like his magical namesake, he has some tricks up his sleeve.

You can preorder PUF! from ava. website.
