House of Doors – Starcave/Burmstar

On ‘Starcave’, all the familiar components of an archetypical Mood Hut release are present; the new age samples, the psychedelic ambience and the breezy jazzy vibe. Yet all these elements feels somewhat unhinged, demented and moody, like a Pender Street Steppers track turned inside out. It may not be one of the label’s most immediate releases, but after some repeat listening it becomes clear the track is one of the best yet from the Vancouver imprint.

On the flip side, with its jazz flutes, squelchy baselines and driving percussion, the two versions of ‘Burmstar’ returns to more familiar grounds and provides a welcome antidote to the darkness of the title track. Like the finest labels, Mood Hut continues to cover new ground, whilst retaining a completely unique sound.
