Those familiar with K15 will know of his meteoric rise after sell out records on Kyle Hall’s Wild Oats and the more soulful and beat natured sister label No Room For Air. But dig a little deeper and you will find more shades to the character of the London producer. While his adeptness for a soul doused house joint or more down tempo cut is clear for all to see, it is also beats and hip-hop that have been a large part of K’s back catalogue to date. Scarlet Tape is the second of a beat tape series kicked off by The Black Tape released early 2014 on INI Movement showcasing K’s talent for on point sampling, and that ability to channel a groove in everything he touches.
We’re delighted to premiere ‘GetDisMoney’ from the forthcoming tape, a darkened rework of Slum Village from the excellent Fantastic Vol 2 album. Taking just the vocals from the original, the production takes on K’s distinctive synth voices and backs up SV’s effortless rhythmical rhyming with a deliberately cavalier, snapping drum line to match. While The Black Tape resembled loss and bereavement, The Scarlett Tape deals with the passion that has started to pay off for K and ‘GetDisMoney’ seems to echo this perfectly; by that we mean the lyrics of hard graft rather than the title!
K had this to say about the release…
How it fits in? The first track picks up where The Black Tape left off. The conversational excerpts are ideals/principles that matter to me and are also answers to questions I continually ask myself or have been asked.
What does Scarlet mean? Well it’s a colour, one of passion, that’s what this tape is about – having a passion about something until you don’t have it anymore. Maybe. Maybe it’s just a beat tape.
Jay Scarlett? His involvement in compilations were of huge importance to me. I remember seeing his name all over the place and feeling really inspired that there was someone supporting the kind of music I was making. He’s been really supportive of lots of things people have done – he has passion. He asked me to do a mix and out of that, the Scarlet tape was born.
The Scarlet Tap is out 15th May on WotNot, is available digitally and on a limited cassette (60 copies). 30 of these are available to pre-order from the WotNot Bandcamp, which also includes an exclusive K15 Scarlet Tape tee.
