J’Danna first triggered shivers down the spine with her stunning rendition of Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘Winter In America‘ a couple years ago. Her commanding vocals propelled by an out-of-the-blue drum and bass line; a literal exemplification of contemporary soul that Scott-Heron would’ve been proud of. Since then, she’s teased us with guest appearances on two Julio Bashmore singles, but now she steps up with her first original solo piece.
The chorus for ‘Gazing’ was first penned when J’D was just 13 and, six years on, the London singer-songwriter still sounds mature beyond her years. As in most accomplished soul music, J’D’s empowered story-telling voice takes the lead, however, in ‘Gazing’, the instrumentation also stands out. Its ability to give space to her vocals make it a perfect accompaniment, mimicking her impressive vocal dexterity. This is most definitely interesting soul music from a young, promising and hugely capable new name.
‘Gazing’ is out today on Paper Moon Records – grab the free download from her website. J’Danna’s album is more than bubbling, and you’ll also be able to catch her live on 11th June at The Finsbury.
