Lumberjacks In Hell is the devil-worshipping label run by Marcel Vogel. Alongside Mr Mendel, Rahaan, Eddie C, Rayko, Jamie 3:26, Inkswell and countless others, he’s created a musical family in Amsterdam, flying the disco flag, in its original and edit form. Last year Marcel Vogel dropped one of our Stamp Mixes of the year, so with news he was coming back to the UK on a LIH tour, we thought we’d focus on his label for a different outlook. Marcel has answered some questions on the label, while Jamie 3:26 has put together an hour-long session to give an idea for the label’s sound.
Catch Marcel Vogel, Rahaan and Jamie 3:26 next weekend for Stevie Wonderland in Manchester and London, as part of their mini UK tour.
HEY MARCEL, HOW HAVE YOU BEEN SINCE WE LAST SPOKE?
Haha, pretty good really… was this last year? The year before? I dunno. Time flies when you’re having fun.
WHERE YOU IN TOWN FOR ADE THIS MONTH? HOW WAS IT?
Yeah ADE is always fun. A birthday party where all your friends come and throw around the birthday cake. We did a little party with Jamie 3:26 and Mark Seven which was really nice. Always good to have so many familiar faces in the same place.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SET UP LUMBERJACKS IN HELL?
The love for music I reckon? Getting involved, being part of a movement.
WHEN AND HOW DID IT ALL TAKE SHAPE?
I started thinking about it when I was still in Switzerland but the first release dropped when I had moved to Amsterdam about four years ago. You could say this is our anniversary tour.
I’M SURE YOU’VE HAD THIS QUESTIONS BEFORE, BUT WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?
Mark Seven and I, DJing in the middle of nowhere. Wintertime. Dinner. Realizing that it would be a very grim evening because nobody showed up. Lumberjacks in Hell.
LOOKING BACK, WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE OVERCOME AS A LABEL?
Not sure. Challenges? I am always busy trying to find heat to release and making sure people feel at home with Lumberjacks. There are a billion labels out there and it’s easy to be left unnoticed. So steady, organic growing is a big thing. Bonding with amazing artists and personalities. The beauty of it is, that we are also forging friendships through this. You grow together. It’s not also the label but also the parties, supporting each other. And of course the learning aspect. Being in proximity to cats like Rahaan and Jamie 3:26 rubs off a lot of experience. If you see them work on a steady basis and keeps the inspiration flowing.
AND WHAT ACHIEVEMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
Chicago Service is pretty amazing. That so many people supported the idea. I am super happy that Rahaan helped me to sign Hugo H. – Chante vs James. The Boogie Nite release. Almost every release has a moment of push and pull. You hear a track and all you can think of is how awesome it will be to have it on record and wrap it up and make it a nice parcel. And then getting the feedback that people understand what you are trying to achieve. It’s like gardening .
THE LUMBERJACKS FROM HELL FAMILY ARE FROM ALL OVER THE PLACE. HOW HAVE YOU GONE ABOUT ASSEMBLING THE TROOPS?
7 or 8 people who have contributed releases so far are actually from Chicago because Chicago has still mad talent beyond belief. It’s in their drinking water. Some releases are chance meetings. Rayko I found on Soundcloud ages ago. I know Oliver Boogie and Mr Mendel from playing out in Amsterdam. Facebook is a meeting point. Common friends. I did at least a handful of parties with Eddie C.
WOULD YOU SAY THERE’S A COMMON THREAD UNITING THEM ALL, SOMETHING THAT STAYS CLOSE TO THE LIH MISSION STATEMENT.
Yeah. Heat. Quality. Cutting out the fat. If it is exciting to me, I’ll put it out. It’s all spirited by disco and soul. Sampled or edited.
OUTSIDE THE LUMBERJACK FAMILY, WHAT DJS, PRODUCERS ARE IMPRESSING YOU AT THE MOMENT?
Max Graef is dope, Theo Parrish, Hunee (who I consider family though), Young Marco is a massive favorite.
YOU’RE TAKING LIH ON A MINI UK TOUR NEXT WEEK WITH STEVIE WONDERLAND. HOW DO YOUR LABEL SHOWCASES USUALLY PAN OUT, COMPARED TO SOLO SETS? DO YOU ALL PREPARE TOGETHER OR JUST WORK OFF EACH OTHER ON THE NIGHT?
Na, we do slots. It’s business as usual, just that it’s fun to travel together, break bread together and set a vibe together. No mishaps with misfitting warm up DJs etc. Just 100% the vibe we want to bring. But we do what we do 100% wherever we go!
WHAT RECORD NEVER LEAVES YOUR BAG AT THE MOMENT?
That’s a toughie. I am trying not to get too attached to certain records. But you can be sure at least one of us will be playing Jamie 3:26 & Cratebug – ‘Hit It and Quit It’ from the Chicago Service compilation. It always tears the roof off!
THIS ONE’S FOR JAMIE…COULD YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE MIX YOU MADE FOR US?
The session was recorded in my home studio, using My Rane 2016,Pioneer EFX 500,Traktor and 2 1200s. I just usually hit record and just play. I never pre-program mixes or sets. I may have a direction I intend to go, but that’s the fun part of it all. I just go where the music and vibe takes me. I did play a few jams by some folks who i think should be heard. One person who I have supported for some time is my man Cratebug. A very talented guy and always can flip shit in a very dope way. I rocked an edit of his, titled Jibaro in the session. I also dropped an edit of David Axelrod’s ‘Mucho Chupar’ By Cordell Johnson. Another Chicago talent. I love it!
WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR LIH IN TERMS OF MORE LIVE APPEARANCES AND RELEASES?
Well, there’s a bunch already set with Inkswel, Mr Mendel and myself. There is a bunch in the works or half ready. Also on the sister label Intimate Friends. And the first Cheetah 12” is being prepared.
So at least two more releases this year. In 2015 I am planning a complete take over 🙂
