So we’ve been exchanging emails with Leaving Records & Brainfeeder‘s Matthewdavid the last couple of days for an upcoming feature with the L.A. producer, but we really couldn’t resist posting this track ahead of all that since it dropped on his Soundcloud yesterday.
His upcoming LP In My World is being released worldwide on Tuesday July 1st via Brainfeeder Records and you can stream it all ahead of that over on Pitchfork right now, paired with some insanely cool visuals. We’ve probably listened to the album about 4 times all the way through already and are pretty sure this is going to hit the top of our 2014 albums of the year list later down the line. It’s seriously that good. Matthewdavid blends Hip-Hop rhythms with elements of Footwork, astral vocals and vaporised synths to create an album with kaleidoscopic colour and vision from start to finish.
These days there’s so much ambient Hip-Hop floating about it’s really hard to distinguish the quality music from the mediocre and fairly forgettable ripoffs. Much like his label-mate Flying Lotus, Matthewdavid‘s visionary and innovative In My World will irrevocably re-energise the L.A. Beat Scene with something completely fresh and creatively unique, and our hat goes off to him.
The track above, Perpetual Moon Moods, samples the 1980’s disco-boogie classic All Night Long by the Mary Jane Girls and turns it into a rumbling Foot[work]-Hop (if that is such a thing) cruise for 4 minutes. Check it out above and keep your eyes peeled for our in-depth feature on Matthewdavid dropping very soon.
